Time to bounce back

Time to bounce back
MK Dons vs Gillingham - 4th Oct 25 Preview

After 21 games unbeaten in all comps, our run finally ended last weekend against Harrogate. It stung, no doubt. Now we’re straight back at it with an early kick-off away at MK Dons (12:30, live on Sky Sports+). Gareth Ainsworth won’t be in the dugout as he’s having planned heart surgery, so Richard Dobson takes charge. Big game, big chance to respond.

A point to prove

Kent Online’s Luke Cawdell summed it up: Ainsworth was proud of how much the defeat hurt and said we’ll “go to win” at MK. We’re still 3rd in League Two, with just one defeat in 22 competitive games, and our defence has been top class — only 0.7 goals conceded per match, second-best in the league. The Harrogate game also ended an 18-match scoring streak, so we’ll want to hit the net again. The squad’s taken some knocks and will be missing the boss on the touchline, but media reports suggest the mood’s positive. Dobson says the players are ready to “run their socks off”.

Nevitt debate

Plenty of chat this week has been about how we react and, especially, what to do with Elliott Nevitt. The View From The Medway Fancast ran a poll asking if Nev should keep his place; over 190 fans voted, and it ended close — 46% said start him, 54% said bench him. One fan (@Weeks_FF) argued Nevitt could be vital against MK’s possession game: “I expect MK Dons to have considerably more of the ball… Nevitt will be important to win it back and create chances through hard work.” Others like @GillsInTheBlood want him to stay in the XI, saying he still offers plenty even if the goals have dried up.

Away from the Nevitt talk, the mood is steady: nobody’s happy about losing to Harrogate, but there’s no panic. Fans expect a reaction and trust the group’s character. Many pointed out how loud Priestfield was last weekend (nearly 8,000 in) and want that backing to carry into the away end at Stadium MK. There’s also a lot of goodwill towards Ainsworth as he recovers, with people backing Dobson to steer us through.

MK Dons still finding their feet

MK are sitting 9th and haven’t really found consistency. They’ve lost three of their last five and only just got back on track with a 2-1 win at Shrewsbury. Stadium MK hasn’t been a fortress either — just one win in five there this season. A big reason is injuries: they’ve had weeks where only ten outfield players were fit. Some are coming back now (Nathan Thompson, Joe Tomlinson, Jon Mellish, Luke Offord) which helps them settle.

Their main threats look to be Alex Gilbey (3 goals), Callum Paterson and Rushian Hepburn-Murphy (2). Defensively they’ve been patchy — 10 conceded in 10 league games — and they’re still working players back to full sharpness. Historically it’s close between us: we’ve won 13 of 30 meetings, they’ve won 10, and we beat them 0-1 there last season.

German Gills score prediction

Even with Ainsworth away, this feels like a game we can edge if we stay solid at the back and take our chances. We’re third for a reason, we’ve not lost away yet this season (2W, 3D), and our defence has been rock steady. MK look vulnerable, especially at home, and still aren’t fully fit. It won’t be easy — they’ll want to make a statement — but if we stay disciplined we should nick it.

Score Prediction – MK Dons 1–2 Gillingham.
